Musical Captions

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 9, 2026

This explains what Musical Captions collects, why, and what we do with it. Short version: we never sell your data, we never share or publish your music, the scores you upload help train and improve Musical Captions unless you turn that off, and we keep as little as we can.

What we get from Whop when you sign in: your Whop user ID, name, email, and whether your membership is active. Whop handles your payment details. We never see your card number.

What we get when you make a free account: with Google, your email, your name if Google shares it, and an ID for your Google account; never your Google password. With an email code, just your email. We don't use passwords: a code works once, for 10 minutes. If you later buy with the same email, we link your free account to your membership.

What we keep on our servers:

  • your membership status, and records of membership changes Whop sends us;
  • how much of your monthly AI allowance you've used: amounts and times only;
  • what you type to the AI assistant and what happened with it: which part of the app answered, whether it worked, how long it took, and what you did right after (pressed Undo, asked again, changed the same setting by hand, or gave the reply a thumbs up or down, with any comment you write there). We save this to improve Musical Captions. It doesn't include your score;
  • copies of the scores you upload, save or make in the app (the music file only, never your recordings, videos or settings), with when and which version of the app, kept privately to train and improve Musical Captions. We never share or publish your music. This is on unless you turn it off in the app: Settings, Privacy, "Use my uploads to improve Musical Captions". Turning it off stops new uploads from then on;
  • crash reports when something in the app breaks: the error, which step you were on, your browser and screen size, and the last few buttons you pressed, never your score or what you type. We save these to fix bugs;
  • anonymous clicks and scrolling on our pages and in the app, to improve them. We never record what you type;
  • a sign-in cookie that keeps you signed in for up to 12 hours (up to 30 days for a free account);
  • when you ask for an email code, a scrambled form of your network address for an hour, so nobody can use us to flood an inbox;
  • if you make a free account or connect Musical Captions to an AI assistant: your name and email, and whether you said yes to tips and updates by email, with the date and your country. We only send those emails if you said yes, each one has an unsubscribe link, and they stop once you're a member.

What stays on your device: your projects, recordings and exports, and your scores while training uploads are off. The app saves a recovery copy in your browser so a crash doesn't lose your work. Recording uses your microphone or camera only when you press record, and the take stays on your device.

When you use the AI assistant: your request and the parts of your score it needs are sent through our server to the AI providers that answer it: OpenAI or Anthropic for the music model, and Jev, a decision service from Typesafe that we reach through Cloudflare, to pick the right control. We save the text of your requests and what happened with them, to improve Musical Captions. The parts of your score sent for an answer aren't kept with your request. A finished answer waits for your app to pick it up and is deleted after delivery, or within about 15 minutes if it's never picked up. Under OpenAI's and Anthropic's API terms, data sent through their APIs isn't used to train their models by default.

On our website (musicalcaptions.com):

  • Ask Puff. Puff is the Musical Captions assistant on our website. What you type to Puff is sent through our server to Anthropic, an AI provider, which writes the answer. We keep your questions and Puff's answers for 180 days to improve Musical Captions and our FAQ, with a random chat ID, never your name or network address. Please don't type personal information into Puff.
  • Website analytics. Our website uses its own analytics, with no cookies and nothing from other companies: which parts of the page you saw, how far you scrolled, what you clicked, which videos you played, the name of the site that sent you and any campaign tags in the link, your screen size, whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer, and how long the page was open. Each visit gets a random ID that ends when you close the tab. We keep this for 90 days. No ad tracking, and we never sell it. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we don't collect any of it.
  • To stop abuse, both count requests per network address using a scrambled form of the address that changes every day and is deleted within 2 days. We never keep the address itself.

Who else processes data for us: Whop (sign-in and payments), Google (if you sign in with it), Resend (sends sign-in code emails), GoHighLevel (our contact list and the emails you agreed to get), Netlify (hosting; its servers keep standard technical logs such as IP addresses), OpenAI, Anthropic, Typesafe and Cloudflare (AI features and Ask Puff, as above). We don't sell or rent your data, and we don't use advertising trackers in the app.

How long we keep it: membership and allowance records are kept for running the business, billing, tax and legal reasons. AI job records are cleaned up within 30 days. What you type to the assistant, crash reports, and the copies of your scores kept to train and improve Musical Captions, are kept until you ask us to delete them. Questions to Puff on our website are kept 180 days, and website analytics 90 days. You can ask us to delete your data at any time (see below).

Your choices and rights: you can ask us what we have about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by emailing jesse@musicalcaptions.com. Deleting your data ends your access. You can also ask us to delete what you've typed to the assistant, your crash reports, or the scores we've kept, anytime, and keep your membership. You can turn training uploads off anytime in the app: Settings, Privacy. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under local law, and we'll honor them.

Children: Musical Captions isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes: if this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and let you know.
